Portland is where the nor'easters come ashore. The rain-snow line sets up along this coast almost every winter storm, sometimes right over the peninsula, and a foot inland at Gorham can mean rain at the waterfront. In summer the sea breeze holds the beaches twenty degrees cooler than Sanford.

Far enough inland that the ocean stops arguing with the forecast: when the coast gets rain, Bangor gets snow, and it gets a great deal of it. North of here the woods run unbroken to the Canadian border, Katahdin makes its own weather, and the winter cold at Greenville is as deep as anywhere in the East.
